Next Level Study Tips to Study Well Part 2 | The Aureus Method

#3. ENVIRONMEN FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE YOUR STUDY

Once we know about personal factors, we also have to look at environmental factors.

Three big areas

There are also three big areas that will affect your study:
  • Place of study
  • Material
  • Environment
Let's look closer.

Place of study

Your place of study should meet some requirements:
  • Place: Find a good place to study where you feel comfortable. This could be your house, a cafe, a library... find your place.
  • Light: You should have natural light where you are studying. If not, at least have a good light so you can clearly see what you are doing.
  • Amplitude: Please, wherever you study, keep your desk as organized as possible. Have space for yourself. If it's too crowded, you will lose focus.
  • Temperature: If it's too hot or too cold, the study conditions won't be adequate. Find your ideal temperature.
  • Distractions: PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY. THIS IS THE WORST DISTRACTION. Other distractions like TV or a computer are also bad. Create an environment where you are focused.

Material

This section is simple:
Before starting to study, prepare all the material you are going to need. That's it.
This way, you won't have to get up every now and then to get something you forgot.

Environment

When we talk about environment, we talk about the people we hang out with.
This is very important, because you are the sum of the 4 people you hang out most with. Choose people wisely.
There are four main people in your life:
  • Family: Your family should support your studies. Help you if needed and encourage you to grow as a person.
  • Friends: Choose your friends wisely. Don't hang out with the "cool" ones, unless they are the ones with the best grades. If you want to get the best grades, I recommend that you start a friendship with smart people.
  • Relationships: Your boyfriend or girlfriend should support you in your studies. If you are in a relationship where your partner forces you to meet with him/her when you have to study, please get out of this relationship. You will be thankful for that in the future.
  • Teachers: Your teachers are important. Usually, teachers are not very motivated to teach, it's just a job to them. If you find a teacher that is motivated, pay attention, ask him/her for advice... On the other hand, if the teacher is not motivated, you will have to study for yourself.
Now we know the environmental factors that influence our study.

#4. ORGANIZATION AND PLANNING

Organization and planning for study

We have already covered this topic. You can read in the "Must Read" posts, if you haven't read that post read it click here to read. we will revisit this so that we can retain this information better.

Good scheduling

A good scheduling should be:
  • Personal: Only for yourself
  • Realistic: I don't think you will study more than 2 hours straight. You should count the rest time too.
  • Balanced: Leave time for sports, friends, family and yourself.
  • Flexible: If something important comes up, don't be to rigid on the schedule. If you can't study today then don't do it.
  • Changeable: You won't stick with the first schedule you make. You will have to test some schedules before you find the one that best suits you.

Steps to create a schedule

I have simplified the process into an image. This is a clear way to understand how to create your own schedule:
How to create a Schedule

The process is like this:
  1. Analyze your personal situation: Your time and your goals.
  2. Elaborate a plan: set long, medium and short term goals.
  3. Create a schedule based on this
  4. If it works, then use it!
  5. If it doesn't work, then create a new schedule until it does.
With this, we end the chapter on organization and planning.

#5. WHAT TO DO DURING CLASS?

What to do during class

Now let's enter one of the most important points: What we should do during class.
Know this: IF YOU PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS, IT WILL BE EASIER FOR YOU TO REMEMBER THE INFORMATION LATER.
Let's begin!

How to get the maximum out of every class

To get the maximum out of every class, you should follow these steps:
  1. Before Class: You should read what you are going to do in that class. For example, if you know you will be studying the Cold War, then do a fast reading before the class starts. If you don't have time, don't worry, this isn't the most important point.
  2. During Class: Take notes. This is very important. I will explain why later, so keep reading!
  3. After class: Study! This is very simple. If you study a few hours later, you will remember that information for a few days. This is extremely helpful.

Why do we take notes?

Taking notes is an effective way to retain some information, that's for sure, but we do this for some other reasons:
  • They help you maintain your focus during class
  • They help you memorize better
  • Their value is infinite. Your notes will be the information that you have to study for the exam
  • They develop the habit of synthesize
  • They allow you to revise the teacher's explanation if necessary
  • They help you select the content that you want to study
Knowing this, I will give you the secret keys of taking notes.

Secret Keys of Taking notes

Here are the secrets that every student should know:
  • Study what you did the last class: This will help you a lot, because you will understand everything your teacher says
  • Sit close to the teacher: This looks like a stupid thing, but the closer you are to the front, the better you can listen and see. The best students are always on the front!
  • Keep a good posture: This means that you have to be comfortable, but at the same time focused. Don't sit like you would sit in your sofa. You are in a class, sit according to that. Your back should be straight your arms on the table. Head up and looking at the teacher or the blackboard.
Now I am going to reveal you the way you take notes effectively. Simply Follow these steps:
  1. Listen to the teacher carefully: Pay attention to expressions like "To sum up", "The most important is that...". Also, be careful with repeated things: if the teacher repeats something more than once, it is probably important.
  2. Think about what you listened: Select the important points and organize them quickly in your mind.
  3. Write: Write the important information. If you have it structured in your mind, it will be easy to write it down. Don't write too much, but make sure that you understand it when you check it later! And please, keep your notes clean... who knows, maybe you can sell them later!
This are the main secrets to taking notes. I want to give you some of my personal advice that helped me through my career.

Some advice on taking notes

Here is some advice that helped me in my student years, and still helps me:
  • Your notes are only useful if you check them regularly. Study!
  • The notes you take are not the ones that the teacher noted on the blackboard. Learn to listen!
  • You will not learn to take notes in a day. It takes time, practice!
  • Keep the notes of different subjects separated from each other. This saves a lot of time!
  • Your class notes should be the ones that help you study. Don't bother doing them again at home!
Now that you know this, I want to help you synthesize. Go to the 3rd part of The Aureus Method.

I will post the 3rd part of the Aureus Method soon.
